Community Engagement at the Hatfield House: Strawberry Mansion Cultural Asset Mapping and Gateway Planning
As artists and activists we are initiating a community-based process in partnership with the Fairmount Park Conservancy (FPC) to gather neighborhood input on the future of this neighborhood gem and surrounding park grounds. Over the next year we will be hosting monthly community events to showcase neighborhood arts, host discussion, and gather ideas. We are looking to make the house a site that truly serves the residents of the neighborhood through direct resources, personal and location-based historic preservation, and community celebration. We have spent the past two years in conversation and facilitation with FPC, during which community coalitions of supporting organizations and neighbor involvement were created and sustained.
Simultaneously, we are participating in the development of a sister project in Sao Paolo, Brazil, where we are co-facilitating an apartment and ‘luncheonette’ as a site for collecting community memory and history. As we partner on this location, we will compare data, approaches, and methods with the work at Hatfield, so as to best serve the individual communities involved and impacted by each.
